Cleansing and clearing

Have you ever felt drained, tired or exhausted for no reason?
Have you ever walked into a room and felt uncomfortable, but not known why?
Sometimes we, or the spaces we live and work in, inadvertently and unknowingly hold negative energies. Negative energies often arise after arguments and disagreements. Stress and trauma can also leave a negative impression on our energy and on the energy in the space around us.

Cleansing and clearing ourselves and the spaces we love is easy! There are lots of ways you can do this. Here are a few of my favourites…

Sage smoke has been used for centuries by the Native Americans to cleanse and clear the energy of people and the energy of a space.
Smudge sticks are made of dried sage, bundled together. I use them whenever I need to smudge a space.
Recently I have discovered that dried sage is also available in loose leaves. I have been experimenting with using a single leaf when I only need to smudge myself, and I am finding it is economical and works just as well.

So, how do I go about cleansing and clearing with sage?

When I need to cleanse my aura/energy, I light a candle, and then I say a prayer asking God/Great Spirit, my Guardian Angels, Angels, Archangels,my Ancestors and my Spirit Animals to help me and protect me… (and if you aren’t OK with calling on of any of the Benevolent Spirit Beings I have mentioned here, please say a prayer to whomever you would normally call on for spiritual assistance)

I then light the sage smudge stick, and when it is smoking (i.e. when the flames are gone, this only takes a moment, usually) I use a large feather – like a turkey feather, or my hand, to carefully guide the smoke all around me, beginning at my head and working down my body. All the while I ask God/Benevolent Spirit Beings that I be cleared of any negative energy.

When I smudge a space, I close all the doors and windows. Then, beginning in the East, I move into each room, and feather the smoke into each of the four corners, then I move around the space in the following direction – South, West, then North, going into each room (and sometimes even each cupboard and wardrobe) feathering the smoke into all four corners of the space. Again while doing this I ask God/Benevolent Spirit Beings to clear the space of any negative energy.

When I am finished, I carefully put out the smudge stick by pressing it firmly into some sand. When that is done I open all the doors and windows, and I thank God/Benevolent Spirit Beings for all of their help and assistance. I then blow out the candle.

There’s a lot on the internet about smudge sticks, I invite you to read more about smudging before you try it.

You can use sound to clear a space too. Tibetan bowls help to clear negative energies while simultaneously attracting positive energies.

Sound the bowl in each corner of the space and allow the vibration to completely dissipate before moving to the next corner.

Clearing Sprays can be fantastic too – these combine water, essential oils, crystals, and flower essences in a spray bottle – you just spritz it around yourself and around the room. I use these sprays myself, both at home and in my clinic.

My Reiki teacher has a lovely one available for sale. Click here for more information.

Or if you prefer, the Australian Bush Flower Essence “Space Clearing Essence Mist” (from most health food stores, or online) is fantastic too. Click here for more information.

Also placing crystals helps to cleanse and clear a space. I love Black Obsidian. Black Obsidian is said to help release negative emotions, and to protect you from negativity.

Black tourmaline would also be an excellent crystal to have around. It is believed to remove negative energies, and protect against negative energies and stress. It encourages happiness, good luck and positive attitudes. It is also said to be purifying and healing.

It is good to cleanse your crystals regularly, in fresh rain water or in salt … and re-energise them by placing them in the light of the full moon.

These lamps emit negative ions which bind to positive ions (emitted by electromagnetic technology – tvs, computers, mobile phones etc). Indoor areas tend to be low in negative ions, whereas mountain air and sea air are high in negative ions. It is said that people tend to feel healthier and suffer from less fatigue and fewer headaches when the air is rich with negative ions.

If you have been attuned to Reiki, you can use Reiki to help clear and cleanse a space.

Draw the Reiki symbols in the air of each corner of the room you are cleansing and clearing. Remember to also draw the symbols in the air at each door and window. This dissipates the negative energy, and fills the space with beautiful, healing Reiki energy.

I hope that some of these ideas resonate with you. I invite you to try these techniques, see how you feel…and let me know how you go!

    1. That sounds lovely! Clearing the energy, and then creating a more harmonious flow in your home sounds like a wonderful way to start the new year! I might just do the same – smudge then reorganize… Thank you for inspiring me today!

  1. Nice post. We recently learned of Palo Santo wood for clearing small spaces. You might like it.

I feel our salt lamps have lost their oomph. I think they are about two years old. Do you know anything about upkeep? Or perhaps I just don’t notice their benefits because I am accustomed to them now?

    1. Thank you, Pamela!
Palo Santo wood sounds very interesting. I haven’t heard of it before, so I am excited to learn about it!
Hmm, I’m not sure if Salt Lamps lose their efficiency over time… I haven’t heard that they do. It could be that we do become used to their beautiful effect on our environment – but in case it isn’t, I’ll do some research and get back to you…
May the space around you be energized and purified, in all directions of space and time.
May your energy be cleansed, cleared and revitalized, now and always.

    2. I’ve done a quick bit of internet based research, and according to a number of websites so long as salt lamps do not get wet, they do not lose their effectiveness over time. Pamela, has your salt lamp gotten wet at any time?

    1. So long as they haven’t been washed or immersed in water, they should be OK.
As you say, it could be that you have grown accustomed to them…
Perhaps you may need to do something else to boost the energy around you – my sense is perhaps some broad-leafed plants will help soak up negative energy and infuse the atmosphere with life giving energy. Maybe you could welcome some lovely new pot plants in to your home?

  2. I’m now not sure the place you’re getting your information, however good topic.
I needs to spend some time learning more or figuring out more.
Thanks for great information I used to be searching for this information for my

    1. Thank you for your feedback. Always remember, different methods of cleansing and clearing suit different people. What I have suggested here may or may not resonate with everyone. It is good to try different methods, and once you find a technique that you are comfortable with and which works well for you, keep using that one.
